If you're planning to become a Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO), one of the first terms you'll hear is DP Sea Time. Almost every stage of the Nautical Institute (NI) certification scheme depends on completing the correct amount of qualifying DP sea time.
Many new candidates ask the same questions:
- โข How many DP days do I need?
- โข What is Phase B & Phase D?
- โข What counts as Active vs Passive DP Days?
- โข How many days are required for Unlimited Upgrade & Revalidation?
๐ What is DP Sea Time?
DP Sea Time is the period you spend onboard a DP-classed vessel while participating in Dynamic Positioning operations under the Nautical Institute Offshore Scheme. Every qualifying DP day moves you one step closer to your DP Certificate. Think of DP Sea Time as your practical training after completing the DP Induction Course. Without sufficient DP Sea Time, you cannot become a certified DPO.
๐ The NI Certification Journey
[Phase B] ๐ข Minimum 60 DP Sea Time Days
[Phase C] ๐ฎ DP Simulator (Advanced) Course (Duration: 4โ5 Days)
[Phase D] ๐ข Minimum 60 Additional DP Sea Time Days
[Phase E] ๐ Statement of Suitability & NI Application Gateway
๐ Phase B โ Your First 60 DP Sea Time Days
After successfully completing the DP Induction Course, you begin collecting your first DP sea time. Minimum Requirement: 60 DP Sea Time Days. During this phase you must also complete all required tasks in your NI Logbook before attending the DP Simulator Course.
- โข Minimum required: 60 Days
- โข Maximum allowed: 90 Days
- โข Up to 30 Active DP Days above the required minimum may be carried forward to Phase D.
- โข Up to 30 Passive DP Days may be counted during Phase B, subject to NI rules.
๐ฎ Phase C โ DP Simulator Course
Once Phase B has been completed, you become eligible to attend the Advanced DP Simulator Course. Typical Duration: 4โ5 Days. During the simulator you will practise equipment failures, thruster blackouts, PRS dropouts, emergency response watchkeeping, and risk assessment to prepare for real offshore operations.
๐ข Phase D โ Second DP Sea Time Gate
After the Simulator Course, you'll continue gaining practical experience onboard. Minimum Requirement: 60 Additional DP Sea Time Days. If you carried over excess active days from Phase B, they may reduce the remaining requirement in Phase D, within NI limits. However, at least 30 active DP days must still be completed during Phase D before the Statement of Suitability can be signed.
๐ Initial DP Certificate Issuance
When you have completed the DP Induction Course, Phase B, DP Simulator Course, Phase D, and Statement of Suitability, you can apply to the Nautical Institute for your first DP Certificate. Depending on your qualifying sea time vessel logs, you may receive either a Limited or Unlimited Certificate under current scheme criteria.
โฌ๏ธ Upgrade to Unlimited Credentials
Many DPOs begin with a Limited Certificate. To remove the limitation and obtain an Unlimited Certificate, the Nautical Institute requires additional experience: Minimum 60 DP Sea Time Days completed exclusively on a DP Class 2 or DP Class 3 vessel. DP1 sea time cannot be used for the upgrade under any circumstances.
Keeping track of these phase matrices manually is difficult. With DPT Offshore Marine, your logbook analytics, active/passive limits, and confirmation letter templates are automatically governed. Secure your profile at ://dynpostraining.com.
